KARACHI: The produce from cotton crop is likely to miss the target by 7 percent while the sugar production to remain lower than target by 17 percent in the next season.
According to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the government estimated target was 15 million bales of cotton from the next crop but due to virus concerns the expectation has now dropped to 14 million bales. The total cotton produce stood at 12.8 million bales in the previous season.
He sugar cane produce is expected to drop to 48 million tonnes in the next season which is 8 percent less compared to the previous season in which it stood at 52 million tonnes. The sugar cane produce hit a record in financial year 2007-08 in which the total quantity jumped to 64 million tonnes.
The Ministry is now expecting the total sugar production to stand at 3 million tones against the total annual requirement of 32 to 35 million tonnes.
